Imvura Iraje (The Rain Comes)

“No one can be authentically human while he prevents others from doing so.” (Paulo Freire)

Amagambo mabi

Those are

Bad words

Where did you learn

To talk like that?

What did Obama do in

Libya

Why did Bush invade Iraq

Mourning for Paris

Only hashtags for Nigeria

And closed doors for

Syrian refugees

But those are

Bad thoughts

Where did you learn

To think like that?

Amagambo mabi

Bad words

Part of me

Wants to be

For you, embodiment of inequity

For you to speak what you

Always see

Cut the world and

Watch it bleed

From afar I watch

My country bleed

A people still not on their knees

Ferguson New York Baltimore Charleston Chicago

Here daily the rains come

Raindrops shower everyone

Nourish lands in rythm

Color the whole world green

But over there the bullets

Shower down like raindrops

Come weekly in headlines

But they aren’t color blind

Amagambo mabi

Those are

Bad words

Let us all learn

To talk like that

Teach me, Father

To feel like that

Amagambo mabi

A language we all understand.
